Preparing for Your First Psychiatric Session

“I was really nervous about starting mental health treatment, but everyone at
Optimum Mental Health Services made the process feel much easier than I
expected. The staff is kind, welcoming, and genuinely caring.”

This review from a patient inspired us to write this blog. We appreciate all the feedback we receive regarding mental health care at Optimum Mental Health Services. From your very first call to your ongoing care, our goal is to make the process straightforward,
efficient, and less stressful.

For many people, attending a first psychiatric session can cause anxiety. You might wonder, “What do I say?” “Will they judge me?” or “What if the provider does not understand me?” All of these concerns are normal, and we are always open to answering any questions you have. When you contact our office, our administrative team will reach out to you within 24 business hours to help match you with a suitable provider and set up your first appointment. Here is a direct guide on how to prepare for your first session so you can get the most value out of your time with your provider.

Complete Your Administrative Paperwork in Advance

Preparing for your appointment starts with paperwork, and your cooperation helps us understand exactly how to assist you. Our team will send you intake forms, medical history questionnaires, and clinic privacy policies via email before your scheduled appointment date. Completing these documents online at least 24 to 48 hours prior to your session allows your provider to review your basic health profile before they meet you. This saves time and ensures your appointment is dedicated to discussing your care. If you are attending an in-person visit at our Renton office, please bring your physical photo ID (such as a driver’s license) and your current health insurance card. If you are using our telehealth services, place these cards next to you before your video call starts, as your provider will need to verify them on screen.

Compile an Accurate Medication List and Medical History

Before your appointment, write a detailed list of all your current medications, including the prescriptions you take for physical health conditions like diabetes. You should also note any past antidepressant medications you have tried, along with ongoing medical conditions such as high blood pressure or chronic pain. Providing this information helps your provider select safe treatments and avoid dangerous drug interactions.

Prepare a List of Questions for Your Provider

Psychiatric care at Optimum Mental Health Services is a two-way conversation. We value your opinions, questions, and concerns, so please do not hesitate to share everything on your mind during your first session. It can be very helpful to write down what you want to ask ahead of time so that you do not forget anything. Some practical questions you might want to ask include:
● What are the treatment choices available for my situation?
● If you prescribe a medication, how many weeks will it take to show therapeutic
effects, and what specific side effects should I expect?
● What will our schedule look like for follow-up appointments?

Just Come as You Are

You do not need to feel calm, organized, or put together for your first appointment. It is completely okay if you find it hard to explain your feelings or if you feel overwhelmed during your session. Our providers are here to guide the conversation and listen to you without any judgment. We welcome you exactly as you are today, and we will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Understand Your Telehealth or Advanced Care Options

How you prepare will depend on the type of care you receive from OPHMS:

Telehealth visits: If you are connecting from home anywhere in Washington State, please choose a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable speaking. Our secure video platform complies fully with privacy laws to keep your sessions confidential.

Advanced care consultations: If you have tried multiple traditional oral antidepressants in the past without success, your first evaluation can focus on specialized alternatives. Our Renton clinic provides Spravato® (esketamine) nasal spray for adults with
treatment-resistant depression. If you are exploring this option, your provider will look
over your past medications during your visit to see if this treatment is right for you.

Insurance Coverage and Self-Pay Financial Details

Understanding your costs helps prevent unnecessary worry before your visit. Optimum Mental Health Services partners directly with a wide range of insurance networks to keep your care accessible. We are in-network with Premera Blue Cross, Regence, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Kaiser Permanente, and many others. Most insurance networks, including Medicare, cover standard initial evaluations as well as specialized treatments like Spravato®.

Our billing staff contacts your insurance company directly before your session to verify your specific mental health benefits, confirm if prior authorization is needed, and calculate your exact copayment. If you prefer not to use health insurance, we offer
direct self-pay rates:
● Initial Diagnostic Evaluation: $300
● Follow-Up Visits: $175
